The Credible Hulk’s Top 5 RPG Series

As of late, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with RPG’s. I love them for the same reason I’m beginning to loathe them, time commitment. Back in my day, RPG’s were the games to play, thanks to the hours of entertainment they provided, tiding you over until your next purchase months later. Now, finding time to play a game, let alone an RPG, is difficult at best. Still, there are many games, and moreover series, near and dear to my heart. As such, I want to celebrate the genre by listing my favorite series. A few caveats: three games (minimum) make a series, therefore, no Chrono Trigger/Cross. Zelda is not an RPG. Otherwise, everything is fair game!

5. Final Fantasy

Despite the series fall from grace in the last decade, it still holds a special place in my heart. Final Fantasy VI was my first RPG, introducing me to a world I never knew existed. There’s still a handful of games that hold up incredibly well today. Maybe I should make a list…

4. Megami Tensei (MegaTen)

Holy crap, there’s a lot under this umbrella. The Persona games alone are an amazing series, not to mention Shin Megami Tensei, Digital Devil Saga, and Devil Summoner… okay, maybe not Devil Summoner. Still, the MegaTen games are amazing, and have only gotten better with every entry. Persona 3, Persona 4 and Nocturne are must plays for any RPG fan.

3. Fallout

Black Isle was an amazing developer, creating some of the best RPG’s of the 90’s. Fallout 3 was an amazing game, but ultimately, it was a mix of the Elder Scroll’s mechanics with the lore created by Black Isle (and Interplay). The original Fallout and Fallout 2 are must plays, especially if you’re a fan of 3. Know your roots son (or daughter)! Tactics is okay. I wouldn’t play Brotherhood of Steel.

2. Fire Emblem

For years this was Nintendo’s secret, until Marth and Roy appeared in Super Smash Bro. Melee (2001). Now, nearly half the series has been localized, with the best entry coming from 2013’s Awakening (3DS). I can’t recommend this series enough for tactical fans. Just remember, this plays for keeps.

1. The Elder Scrolls

One game in the series is more than enough to keep you occupied for hundreds of hours. Adding mods into the equation, you’ll never need another game again. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are not only the best of the series, but some of the best RPG’s ever created. Pick up any of these games (on PC, you heathen), and get lost.

This list was harder than you think.

  1. It’s got to Baldur’s Gate for me, also by Black Isle. That game was hopelessly addictive. It even used to have messages built in to tell you take a break, eat and so on.
