After creating a plethora of fantastic new shows for their mature rated cartoon block, Adult Swim, the producers at Williams Street began to branch out with more original content. While most of it was garbage like 12 oz. Mouse or Perfect Hair Forever, there was a few gems in the mix, such as Stroker and Hoop. Unlike the rest of the nonsense Adult Swim was showcasing, Stroker and Hoop was a hilarious show, but cancelled after one season. Hope you like cliffhangers.
The show was a buddy cop parody in the vein of Starsky & Hutch, with a dash of Knight Rider and pinch of Burt Reynolds mixed in. John Strockmeyer and Hoop Schwartz were two inept private investigators, taking cases from those who couldn’t afford better service. Helping them solve their cases was C.A.R.R., a sentient automobile styled after K.I.T.T. Rounding out the cast was Double Wide, an eccentric mechanic who invented C.A.R.R., and Coroner Rick, the coroner.
Sadly, the show only lasted a single 13 episode season, without a single dud among them. One of my favorite was the Christmas episode “I Saw Stroker Killing Santa (a.k.a. A Cold, Dead, White Christmas).” Though the writers took the cliched route of parodying A Christmas Carol, there was enough originality to it that kept in fresh in my mind today.
The best episode of the series though was the finale “Three Cheats to the Wind (a.k.a. Putting the ‘Ass’ in Assassin).” The duo often caused all manner of collateral damage in the pursuit of justice. Finally, someone tried to extract revenge. Sadly, this ended on a cliffhanger, as the show was not renewed. The creators Casper Kelly and Jeff Olsen made a blog post on the Adult Swim site, outlining the premier if the show was picked up for a second season. At least there was a bit of closer.
Stroker and Hoop was a fantastic early Adult Swim show that was sadly cancelled well before it’s time. This gem is definitely worth digging up. Give it a go, I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
