Another big comic book movie released this week, The Amazing Spider-Man 2! What did I think? Come back tomorrow to find out. In the mean time, let’s look at this week’s books.
Uncanny Avengers Annual #1:
This was a fun one-off story. I thought this would be continuing the main book, but instead gave us a Supernatural Avengers/Mojo tale, the latter of which can be fun if used in the right way. Thankfully, Remender pulled it off. There was plenty of meta-commentary about what fans want, critics think, and the like to keep me chuckling. Plus, seeing Thor act like a high school jock is always fun. Will this lead into anything is the question? And why is Satana topless on the cover?
Batman Eternal #4:
Batgirl’s on the case! Seems like a couple threads have been dropped (Catwoman in particular), but since this is a weekly book, it’s easy to let that slide. At least they’re keeping the Stephanie Brown/Spoiler ball rolling. Now, I’m waiting for Harper to make her appearance. Dustin Nguyen takes over art duties this week. A little jarring but Nguyen’s always been suited for Batman books and does a fantastic job. It’s going to take a while before we get some payoffs. Hope they’re worth it.
Southern Bastards #1:
This was a dark and a lot of fun. Jason Aaron built a good aire of mystery with this. I’m not sure what to make of Earl’s dad, though I now have a good idea. This seems like it’ll be scary and a must read. Hopefully his next Scalped. Bring on more!
With the last panel on a page ending with a mention of Poyo, I couldn’t have been more excited to turn the page. Chew hasn’t had a bad issue yet. With only 19 more to go, I can’t wait to see how it ends. Hopefully Poyo will be involved.
Atomic Robo – The Knights of the Golden Circle #1:
I love Atomic Robo. The last few volumes haven’t been very good, sadly. Thankfully, the last arc, the Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur brought it back, leaving Robo in an interesting place. This picks up those threads, seeing Robo stuck in the old west, Back to the Future 3 style. I had mixed feelings about this first issue. Average, not as funny, mostly set up. I hope this does something interesting with the premise.
